Caterpillar Expands Technology Equipment of Mini Excavator Series
The US construction equipment giant Caterpillar has announced comprehensive technological upgrades for its compact excavator fleet in the weight range of 5 to 10 tons. The models Cat 305 CR, 308 CR, 309 CR and 310 receive new operating aids, improved drive systems and expanded camera options. These measures aim to strengthen competitiveness in the fiercely contested excavator segment.
Ease-of-Use Technology for the 5-Ton Range
The Cat 305 CR will be delivered from the factory with the possibility of retrofitting the Ease-of-Use (EOU) technology package. Operators can activate the E-Fence and Indicate functionalities that are already established in the larger 6- to 10-ton models.
E-Fence System Offers Versatile Protection
The E-Fence system automatically restricts machine movements within previously defined boundaries and prevents collisions with obstacles or utility lines. The configuration includes four protection functions:
- Ceiling mode: Protection from high-voltage lines, ceilings or branches
- Floor mode: Depth limitation for protection of underground fiber optic and utility lines
- Wall mode: Protection of structures from the mini excavator
- Swing mode: Avoidance of collisions with traffic areas or sidewalks
The Indicate system supports drivers with visual and acoustic signals for precise adherence to depths and inclinations. A new Laser Catcher option enables external laser reference measurements for larger or multi-part construction sites.
Engine and Hydraulic Upgrades for Larger Models
The models 308 CR, 309 CR and 310 receive the new Cat C2.8 engine. Despite smaller displacement, the power output matches the previous C3.3B powerplant with reduced maintenance effort. The Tier 4 Final/Stage V-compliant system uses a maintenance-free DOC and DPF system.
Enhanced Hydraulics and Camera Equipment
A third hydraulic auxiliary circuit is now available for complex hydromechanical attachments. For visibility improvement, Caterpillar relies on comprehensive camera integration:
- Rear-view camera is standard on all three models
- Cat 310 additionally receives a side camera as standard
- Cat 308 CR and 309 CR can optionally be equipped with side camera
New Attachment Blade for the 308 CR
The 308 CR can be equipped from the factory with an angle blade that simplifies backfilling and grading work. The integration of Stick Steer and blade control via the right joystick enables use as a compact bulldozer replacement. The package includes floating blade guidance and a reversible three-piece wear cutting edge.
Impact on the European Market
These technological upgrades strengthen Caterpillar's position in the compact excavator segment and increase competitive pressure on European manufacturers. Particularly companies like Mecalac, which specialize in innovative digitalization solutions, must adapt their development strategies to compete for technology-oriented customers.
The new models will be presented at the Equip Exposition (October 21-24) in Louisville, Kentucky, in limited "Centennial Grey" edition, where visitors can test the new attachment blade configuration of the 308 CR.
