While industry insiders effortlessly switch between Compact Excavator, Mini Excavator and Mini Digger, newcomers face an impenetrable jungle of technical terms. This development could prove to be a sales impediment, experts warn.

Diversity of Terminology Worlds Burdens Market Communication

The terminology problem is particularly evident in the categorization of construction machinery. What is referred to as mini excavator in Germany operates under various names internationally: The spectrum ranges from "Compact Excavator" to "Mini Digger". This inconsistency not only complicates communication between manufacturers and customers, but also search engine optimization and international marketing.

It becomes particularly complex when describing attachments. Hydraulic hammers, grapples, various bucket variants and specialized tools like tiltrotators are designated completely differently in different markets. A "Grapple" in the American market corresponds to the German "Greifer", while "Selector Valves" must be translated as switching valves.

International Expansion Made Difficult

For manufacturers looking to expand into international markets, terminology diversity becomes a serious problem. Marketing materials must not only be translated, but adapted to local terminologies. This leads to higher costs and delayed market launches.

The situation is exacerbated by the digitalization of the industry. Online portals and e-commerce platforms require uniform product categories to ensure functional search capabilities. The current terminology makes this nearly impossible.

Sales experts report increasing problems with customer acquisition. Potential buyers are often overwhelmed by the abundance of technical terms and therefore shy away from investment decisions. Particularly in the area of compact excavators between one and eight tons weight, unclear terminology leads to uncertainty.

While specialists continue to need precise terms, beginners and international customers must be able to be reached.
