Italian telescopic loader manufacturer Merlo has announced the development of a new powertrain generation in a recent video. The company is still withholding concrete technical details about the powertrain innovation, but initial indications point to electrification or the use of alternative fuels. For telescopic loaders with typical operating weights between 12 and 18 tons, the powertrain transition presents a particular challenge: the combination of high lifting capacity, long operating times, and frequent load changes requires powerful energy storage or efficient hybrid concepts. Merlo has so far left open when first prototypes or series machines will be available.
