The specialist magazine Top Agrar tested five current telescopic handler models thoroughly. In the comparison test, Manitou, JCB, Bobcat and the Italian manufacturers Merlo and Dieci competed against each other. The test provides insights into the performance and market positioning of the machines under real operating conditions.
Telescopic handlers are among the most versatile machines on the construction site. They combine the lifting height of a aerial work platform with the reach of a crane and the maneuverability of a wheel loader. In building construction, material handling and agriculture, they are indispensable. That's exactly why direct comparison between manufacturers is crucial.
Merlo positions itself as an Italian specialist with over 65 years of experience in telescopic handler construction. The brand is particularly strong in agriculture but also wants to gain ground in the construction segment. Against Manitou from France, the British world market leader JCB and the US compact machinery giant Bobcat, this is no easy task. Dieci, also from Italy, is considered a direct competitor of Merlo.
Top Agrar's practical test focused on handling, lifting capacity, reach and operating comfort. These criteria are decisive for construction companies: anyone working 8 to 10 operating hours daily with the machine needs a well-thought-out operating concept. The joystick control, visibility from the cabin and precision in load handling determine productivity and safety on the construction site.
Particularly interesting: the comparison shows how much manufacturers differ in lifting capacity and maximum reach. With telescopic handlers of similar operating weight, differences in load capacity at full extension can be up to 20 percent. This directly affects the possible applications: those who regularly stack pallets at 6 meters height need reserves in tipping load.
For fleet managers, the test is a valuable decision aid. Acquisition costs for a mid-size telescopic handler range between 80,000 and 120,000 euros. With a planned service life of 6,000 to 8,000 operating hours over five years, maintenance-friendliness, spare parts availability and resale value must be right. Here, established brands like JCB and Manitou traditionally have the edge.
The full test report provides detailed data on individual models and shows in which areas Merlo can score points. For the industry, the comparison is evidence of how intense competition in the telescopic handler segment has become. Italian manufacturers are catching up – especially in terms of price-performance ratio.
