Yanmar Presents Complete Compact Equipment Portfolio
Japanese construction equipment manufacturer Yanmar has completely overhauled and expanded its North American compact equipment portfolio. At the Media Day in the EVO Center in Acworth, Georgia, the company presented a complete range of earthmoving machines in the new red design – from compact loaders to mini excavators to track vehicles.
"Modernizing our portfolio was a core priority in North America," explained Anna Christine Sgro, President of Yanmar CE North America. "We are focused on strengthening our key product lines such as compact wheel loaders, compact track loaders and mini excavators to remain sharp and competitive in the market."
Strategic Expansion Through ASV Acquisition
The foundation for Yanmar's success in the North American compact equipment market was laid in 2019 with the acquisition of track loader pioneer ASV. Since then, Yanmar CE has been producing in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where a 32,000 square foot expansion was realized in 2023. The new facility includes modern paint facilities for the characteristic Yanmar red and increased manufacturing capacity.
The current product range in North America includes four compact track loader models, ten mini excavator variants, five compact wheel loaders and two track carriers. In parallel, Yanmar reached a significant milestone: the production of the 300,000th mini excavator at the Japanese Chikugo plant.
Electrification as Future Strategy
Particularly forward-looking is Yanmar's commitment in the field of electric construction machines. After acquiring Dutch battery specialist Eleo Technologies in 2022, the company established its own electrification unit in 2025. This develops e-powertrain solutions for emission-free construction machines.
Three electric models are already available – the V8e wheel loader, the SV17e mini excavator and the C08e carrier – but initially only on the European market. "With our broader, more complete range, we are positioning ourselves strategically for future market requirements," emphasized Sgro.
Competitive Pressure on European Suppliers
Yanmar's complete restructuring could increase competitive pressure on established European manufacturers such as Mecalac, which are active in similar compact equipment segments. The Japanese group benefits from its long-standing expertise as a diesel engine supplier for brands such as Toro, John Deere, Ditch Witch and Wacker Neuson.
"We see North America as the largest contributor to our global compact equipment sales in the coming years," said Sgro. The strategy focuses on increased local production and closer customer relationships – a challenge for European competitors who must maintain their market position in this lucrative segment.
The impressive 50,000 square foot EVO Center north of Atlanta serves as a training center, showroom and brand ambassador all at once – a clear signal for Yanmar's long-term ambitions in the North American construction equipment market.
