Design consequences: compact engine bay, counterweight must be centred over the undercarriage (not overhanging at the rear), fuel tank and hydraulic tank are laterally mounted. To compensate for reduced counterweight, track length is often slightly extended and digging force in the front zone is reduced. On modern models, the reach loss compared with standard is only 5-10 percent — insignificant for most applications.

Prices and rental: short-tail premium versus standard configuration in 2025 typically 5-12 percent. Cat 308 CR (short-tail) instead of 308 (standard) about 8-10 percent premium.
