The load hook is the bottom element of the crane chain boom → rope → hook block → hook and provides the connection to the load. Crane hooks are standardized according to DIN 15401 (single hook) and DIN 15402 (double hook) and are manufactured from forged quenched and tempered steel (e.g., 34CrNiMo6).
The load capacity of a hook is defined by its WLL (Working Load Limit) and is permanently impressed. Safety latches (hook mouth protection) prevent unintentional disengagement of slings — they are mandatory for lifting equipment. Ball bearings on the hook shank enable free 360° rotation of the load.
Regular inspection is legally required (BetrSichV, DGUV Regulation 52): crack testing (magnetic particle or dye penetrant method), mouth opening inspection (≤10% widening = replacement) and visual inspection for wear, corrosion, and deformation. Damaged hooks must NEVER be repaired (welded, straightened) — only replacement is permitted.
