The low-profile excavator is a hydraulic excavator in extremely low-height construction for applications with severely limited ceiling height. Typical applications include basement excavation, tunnel renovation, work in parking garages, under bridges, or in existing buildings. The overall height ranges from 1.2 to 2.0 meters depending on the model — standard mini excavators require 2.3–2.5 meters.
The low-height design is achieved through a lowerable or flat uppercarriage, a lower-mounted cabin (often with flat glazing or completely open), and a modified boom attachment point. Some models like the Brokk 170 are completely cabin-free and operated by remote control.
Manufacturers such as Komatsu (PC18MR-5 Canopy), Takeuchi (TB216), and Brokk offer specialized low-profile excavators. Despite their compact construction, these machines are powerful: digging forces and reach approximately match those of their standard model counterparts. Rubber track undercarriages are standard to avoid damaging floor surfaces.
