Classes and models: compact wheeled excavators 6-11 t (Wacker Neuson EW65, Yanmar B7 Sigma, Kubota RE7 series), standard 12-20 t (Liebherr A 912, Caterpillar M317F, Volvo EW160E, Komatsu PW148-11), upper class 20-30 t (Liebherr A 918/A 920/A 924, Cat M320F, Volvo EW220E, Hitachi ZX210W-6). A distinctly European category — Cat and Komatsu produce wheeled excavators mainly for DACH, while the US market and Asia prefer crawler excavators. Liebherr is market leader in Germany.

Chassis and axles: 2-axle chassis dominate the compact segment (6-14 t), 3- and 4-axle (twin tyre configurations available) from 15 t upwards. Standard parking brake with hydraulic outriggers (paws) at front and/or rear for stable digging — depending on boom position, up to 100 percent of operating weight is transferred through the outriggers during heavy digging cycles. Suspension typically lockable for driving and releasable for digging. Tyre choice: full-tread standard tyres for site work, road pattern for longer travel legs, twin tyres for soft ground.

Applications: utility and sewer works in inner-city streets (gas, water, district heating, fibre), municipal winter services and tree felling with attachments, roadside maintenance (embankment mowing with long-reach boom), rail works (with road-rail equipment — see road-rail excavator). The advantage of changing sites without a lowbed makes the wheeled excavator significantly more profitable for contractors with many small jobs than a comparable crawler excavator.

Powertrain and EU Stage V: engines 90-160 kW to Stage V with DPF and SCR catalyst. Hydrostatic travel drive (typically two travel modes "site" and "road"), load-sensing working hydraulics. First electric models as prototypes (Wacker Neuson EW65 Electric for the compact segment, Hitachi concepts for the mid-range). Pure serial battery-electric use at 20 t is not yet economic — road range plus site runtime cannot yet be combined with a sensible battery pack.

Prices: compact wheeled excavator new EUR 89,000-125,000, standard 15-t class EUR 160,000-210,000, upper class 20-24 t EUR 240,000-320,000. Residual value after 5 years and 6,000 h at Liebherr and Cat typically 50-60 percent. Weekly rental standard 15 t: EUR 950-1,250. Operating cost per hour including fuel, operator, wear and depreciation for a 20-t wheeled excavator sits at EUR 95-130 — significantly below the comparable crawler excavator, because the lowbed transport falls away.
