Caterpillar is world market leader with over 45 percent share, followed by Komatsu (25 percent), John Deere (15 percent), Volvo Construction Equipment and Case.

3D machine control: no other segment uses 3D control as intensively as the grader. Cat AccuGrade, Trimble Earthworks Grade Control, Topcon 3D-MC/i, Leica MC1 automatically control the blade to GPS/total-station reference — tolerance below 3 mm on 30 m. The operator only moves the grader along the alignment; blade position and angle are electronically controlled. On the most modern models (Cat 24M with CAT Grade Assist), steering is also assisted — the grader drives automatically along the target-plan curve. Fully autonomous grader systems are in prototype operation at Skanska (Sweden) and Cat AutonoDrive.

Applications: road new-build (fine grade before asphalt paving: after bulldozer coarse grade, the grader delivers the 3-cm fine grade), road maintenance (unpaved-road maintenance in rural areas — Canada, USA, Australia), runway rehabilitation at airports (extreme precision requirements), haul roads in quarries and mines (Cat 24M in copper mines), winter service (Nordic countries use graders with plough attachment for motorway clearing).

Prices and rental: new prices 2025: Cat 140M3 (standard 17 t) EUR 380,000-460,000, Cat 160M3 (large 20 t) EUR 490,000-590,000, Cat 24M (ultra-large 62.5 t) EUR 1.2-1.5 million. Fuel consumption: 15-22 l/h standard, 45-55 l/h ultra-large. Weekly rental at Zeppelin Rental and Kiesel: Cat 140M3 EUR 2,400-3,100, Cat 160M3 EUR 3,100-4,100.
