The digging bucket is the standard bucket for excavators. Characteristic: teeth face towards the excavator (not away like on high-lift buckets), so that during digging, material is conveyed upwards towards the machine. Application: excavation of pits, trenches, sewers, foundations and pipe runs — the most commonly deployed bucket design in daily construction work.
Construction features: the bucket body is a steel-sheet trough with hardened front edge and tooth row. Volume is calculated per SAE standard (heaped capacity) — typically laid out with 20-30 percent heaping reserve for safe load without spillage when slewing. Standard widths: for 8-t excavators 30-60 cm, for 22-t excavators 60-100 cm, for 40-t excavators 100-160 cm. Bottom of HB400 hardened steel, side cutting edges of HB500 (extreme hardness). Application-specific variants: standard digging bucket for mixed soils, trenching bucket (narrow 30-45 cm) for utility runs (water, gas, electricity, district heating, fibre), sewer bucket with pointed cutting edge for deep trenches, special digging bucket with grader edge (no teeth) for fine grade, trough bucket (with recesses for pipe casings), rock bucket with particularly long teeth for hard ground, fissure bucket for rock crevices in quarries.
Size choice and fit: the digging bucket must match the base machine — both in excavator-class segment (bucket volume) and in bucket-pin diameter for mounting. A Cat 320 (22 t) has 90 mm pin diameter and typical bucket width 900 mm — standard bucket volume 1.00 m³. A Cat 349 (50 t) has 120 mm pin diameter and bucket width 1,400 mm — volume 2.50 m³. Mismatches between bucket and excavator overload the base machine (boom hydraulics) or result in under-volume with too small a bucket — both expensive.
Quick change and range: a professional excavator operation typically stocks 3-5 digging-bucket sizes per base machine: narrow trenching bucket (30-45 cm), standard digging bucket (75-90 cm), pit-excavation bucket (150-200 cm) and specialty buckets (sieve, trapezoidal, grader — depending on job profile). Change via quick coupler in under 30 seconds — the operator stays in the cab.
