The variable-angle boom (two-piece boom) is the excavator boom configuration whose geometry is hydraulically adjustable — the boom can be moved into different positions during operation. This enables different working radii and digging curves without retooling the base machine. Core advantage: the excavator can traverse different reaches in confined surroundings (indoors, narrow sites, handling in tight environments).
Types: classic two-piece boom with additional hydraulic cylinder at the boom mid-joint — the second half of the boom pivots against the first. Used in Cat CR series (Compact Radius) for short-tail-swing excavators. Two-joint boom for urban use — provides additional flexibility for façade work and digging positioning at kerbs. Triple-articulated boom for material handlers (see material handler) with three independently controllable boom sections.
Use in the compact segment: Cat E series and successor CR series in the 15-30-t class have variable-angle booms as standard — the boom can be adjusted from digging position (bucket under the base machine) to handling position (bucket far in front of the base machine). A 22-t excavator with variable-angle boom achieves at the same position: 6.5 m digging depth in dig configuration AND 8.5 m reach in handling configuration. Conversion between modes takes 30-60 seconds via boom hydraulics.
Loss of digging force: the additional boom-joint structure reduces digging force at the bucket tip — typically 15-25 percent less breakout force than a mono-boom of the same excavator class. This is why variable-angle booms are not standard in the large-excavator segment (>40 t) or in quarry work — for heavy digging, the rigid mono-boom is preferred. For excavators under 22 t and urban applications, variable-angle booms are advancing — Cat, Volvo and Hitachi equip almost all compact and mid-range excavators with them.
Prices and economics: variable-angle boom premium versus standard boom typically 8-15 percent on new purchase. Cat 320 with standard boom EUR 245,000 — with variable-angle boom (2P) EUR 260,000-280,000. Economics: per site, the variable-angle boom saves 15-25 percent retooling time and gives more flexibility — for contractors with many small sites and urban use, the premium amortises after around 1,500-2,500 operating hours. For monotonous digging duty (quarrying, site excavation), the standard mono-boom remains the more economical choice.
