The vibratory plate compactor is the hand-operated compaction device with vibrating base plate for compacting small areas — paving works, footpaths, trench backfill, permeable-paver foundations, terrace substructure. It transmits high-frequency vibrations (typically 60-100 Hz) via the steel base plate directly into the material and compacts sand, chippings, aggregate and thin soil layers to a compaction depth of 15-45 cm.
Types and operation: forward plate compactors are the simplest design — they only travel in one direction. Reversible plate compactors (Wacker Neuson DPU 2540H/DPU 3050H/DPU 6555, Bomag BPR 25/40/60/70, Weber MT CR 3, Ammann APR 5920) have switchable exciter shafts and can travel forwards and backwards — standard in professional site use because they work along kerbs and edges without turning. Remote-controlled plate compactors (with cable or infrared) protect the operator from fall risk and vibration exposure in trench work — mandatory for trench widths from 60 cm.
World market and manufacturers: Wacker Neuson (Munich/DE) is world market leader in the hand-compaction segment with over 30 percent share. Bomag (Fayat Group), Ammann (Langenthal/CH), Weber MT (Bad Laasphe/DE), Weibang and the Japanese Mikasa are the other significant suppliers. Wacker Neuson and Ammann dominate in Germany/Austria/Switzerland, Bomag has strength in the French and Italian markets. Chinese suppliers (Sinoboom, XCMG) are still little present in construction retail and rental.
Classes by operating weight: small plate compactor 60-100 kg (Wacker Neuson VP 1030A, Bomag BPR 25/40, Weber MT CR 1) for cable-sand bedding and lawn edging, standard 100-250 kg (Wacker Neuson DPU 2540H/3050H, Bomag BPR 60/70) for paving and footpaths, large 300-800 kg (Wacker Neuson DPU 6555, Bomag BPR 70/85/100) for trench work and road base construction. From 800 kg upwards, the transition to small single-drum rollers begins.
Powertrain and environment: the standard is a petrol or diesel drive engine (Honda GX series or Yanmar/Hatz) with centrifugal clutch. Diesel dominates from approx. 200 kg operating weight — lower fuel cost and more robust for continuous operation. Battery-electric plate compactors have been on the market since 2020: Wacker Neuson AP 1850e, Bomag BPR eco, Ammann APR 22/40 e — with 4-6 h runtime and ideal for inner-city sites with emissions regulations, indoor work and night operations. Price premium over diesel variant 30-60 percent, declining.
Prices and rental: new prices: small plate compactor 100 kg EUR 1,500-2,400, standard 200 kg EUR 3,200-4,500, reversible large plate 500 kg EUR 6,500-9,500, large 800 kg EUR 11,000-14,500. Electric variants with +30-60 percent premium. Weekly rental at HKL, Zeppelin Rental and Boels: small EUR 55-85/week, standard EUR 120-170/week, large plate EUR 220-320/week. It is the most frequently rented compact machine for small contractors — payback for owned use from approx. 200 operating hours per year.
