Wide tires (also known as low-pressure tires or flotation tires) have a significantly larger contact area than standard tires and substantially reduce ground pressure. This prevents rut formation on soft soils, protects grass surfaces, and enables machine operation under ground conditions that would be impassable with standard tires.
In landscaping, dike construction work, and agriculture, wide tires are often mandatory. Typical dimensions: 600/40-22.5 or 710/50-26.5 for dumpers and telescopic handlers. Air pressure ranges from 1.0–2.0 bar, significantly lower than standard tires (3–5 bar). Terragrip and AS tread patterns provide adequate traction despite the width.
Manufacturers such as BKT, Trelleborg, and Alliance offer specialized tire lines for construction equipment. Important: Wide tires alter the machine's center of gravity and overall width — for road transport, the maximum vehicle width (2.55 m without special permit) must be observed.
