The work platform, in German "Arbeitsbühne", is the umbrella term for all platforms that safely transport people and material to height — from the simple stepladder via mobile scaffolds to the motor-driven mobile elevating work platform. In the narrower construction and equipment industry sense, "work platform" usually refers to the mobile, motor-driven platform — as opposed to fixed scaffolds or maintenance platforms in industrial installations.

Categorisation by design: mobile elevating work platforms (see separate entry) with motor drive and working heights above 50 m, truck-mounted platforms on road chassis (typically 3.5-t or 7.5-t trucks with hoist superstructure — Bocker, Ruthmann, GSR), trailer-mounted platforms (Denka-Lift, Omme Lift) for short assignments with a BE trailer licence, tracked platforms with crawler undercarriage (Palazzani, Hinowa, Multitel) for uneven ground and narrow accesses (landscaping, church-tower work). Fixed work platforms are common on industrial and works installations (airports, power-station maintenance) and in maintenance zones.

Certification and law: all motor-driven work platforms are subject to the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (BetrSichV) and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Inspection: recurring inspection under § 14 BetrSichV, at least annually by competent person (Sachkundiger under DGUV Grundsatz 308-002), extended inspection every 4 years by certified expert. For operation on public ground, self-propelled work platforms require road registration with brake, lighting and steering systems per StVZO — most rough-terrain platforms (site use) avoid this by being limited to operating premises.

Operator qualification: DGUV Grundsatz 308-008 requires for operation of a motor-driven work platform an operator certificate with theoretical and practical training. Training can be delivered by employers or external providers (BG BAU, TÜV Nord Akademie, rental companies such as HKL and Zeppelin Rental). Supplementary training for special designs (truck-mounted platform, tracked platform) is mandatory with some providers. Medical: at least G25 (driving and control activity) is recommended; for working heights above 20 m, G41 (fall risk) is often additionally required.

Applications: façade work and window cleaning, building inspection and maintenance of industrial halls (lighting, sprinklers, ventilation), tree felling and green space maintenance (church façades, old-tree care), film and TV production (camera runs), advertising installation (billboards, hoardings), church restoration and monument care. The alternative of scaffold construction is economically almost always inferior for assignments under 3 days — assembly and dismantling of a 15-m scaffold often costs more than a week's platform rental.

Market volume and trends: the German rental market for motor-driven work platforms in 2025 sits at approx. EUR 380-450 million per year, with annual growth of 4-7 percent since 2019. Consolidation in rental: HKL Baumaschinen, Zeppelin Rental, Boels, Kiloutou, Loxam and Riwal are the dominant providers. Electrification is the strongest technology trend — over 60 percent of new deliveries are battery-electric. The Sinoboom share of the European market has doubled since 2020 to approximately 8-12 percent.
