Manufacturer landscape: ATLAS (Delmenhorst/DE, Terex Group) is the classic road-rail excavator supplier with models 1404 ZW and 1804 ZW on wheeled undercarriage and the tracked road-rail excavator 1305 M ZW. Other suppliers: Liebherr (A 918 and A 924 with rail conversion kit), Colmar (Italy, rail specialist), Sennebogen (rail conversion of the 830 E), Volvo (EW160E ZW), Palfinger (superstructure cranes as road-rail). Rail conversion system: the rail wheels are lowered via hydraulic actuators (rail assemblies) beneath the chassis and lift the road wheels minimally off the ground. Transitions between road and rail require 3-8 minutes of conversion time and a level transition area. Regulation: operators require the rail driver's licence (RIL 46 of Deutsche Bahn) plus road-rail excavator supplementary training.

Road applications: road sewer and utility works (excavator drives on the road, works alongside the alignment), cable laying parallel to the railway (excavator drives on site road, slew reach to the rail embankment), façade and extension work near railways. Advantage versus a pure rail special vehicle: the excavator is used on ordinary road construction between rail assignments and is thereby better utilised.
