ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure) is a standardized protective structure that protects the operator compartment from deformation during machine overturn and ensures a survival space for the operator. ROPS is legally mandatory for most construction machines over 700 kg (EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, ISO 3471).

The ROPS structure consists of high-strength steel profiles integrated into the cab or mounted as a separate roll bar (on open machines). Testing according to ISO 3471 simulates loads from various directions and ensures that deformation does not violate the survival space (DLV — Deflection Limiting Volume).

In addition to ROPS, there is FOPS (Falling Object Protective Structure, ISO 10262) for falling objects and TOPS (Tip-Over Protective Structure) specifically for telehandlers. On mini excavators and compact loaders, ROPS is often designed as a reinforced cab guard that can be folded if needed to reduce the passage height.
