Swedish mining equipment manufacturer Epiroc and Chinese construction equipment manufacturer SANY have agreed on a strategic cooperation that covers two core areas: the development of autonomous mining solutions and the integration of hydraulic attachments. The alliance aims to combine Epiroc's automation expertise with SANY's production capacity and market access in Asia.
Epiroc is considered a technology leader in autonomous systems in mining and has years of experience with driverless drilling and loading equipment in 24/7 operation. The cooperation with SANY is intended to transfer this technology to a broader range of machines – particularly large equipment for open-pit and underground mining. SANY brings its manufacturing expertise and strong position in the Chinese market, which accounts for around 50 percent of global mining investments.
In the area of hydraulic attachments, Epiroc plans to adapt its proven hydraulic hammers and attachment technology for SANY carrier equipment. This is particularly relevant for the demolition and recycling sector, where hydraulic tools such as crushers, shears and grapplers are increasingly being equipped with telematics systems. The integration of Epiroc attachments into SANY excavators could strengthen their competitive position against established suppliers such as Caterpillar.
The partnership comes at a time when competition in the mining sector is intensifying. Caterpillar has already established its own autonomous platform with its Command system and dominates particularly the North American and Australian markets. Komatsu is also advancing automation with its FrontRunner technology. Through the SANY alliance, Epiroc is now positioning itself more strongly in the growing Asian market, where previously mainly local suppliers and XCMG have dominated.
Technologically, Epiroc relies on open interfaces and manufacturer-independent automation modules that can be integrated into existing fleets. This distinguishes the company from closed ecosystems such as Caterpillar's. The question remains whether this strategy can also convince large mining operators, who often prefer long-term service and spare parts contracts with a single OEM.
Outlook: The cooperation is currently in the pilot phase. First joint projects are scheduled to start in Chinese open-pit mines in 2025. Market-ready series products – particularly autonomous wheel loaders and dump trucks with Epiroc control on SANY platform – are expected no earlier than 2026. The key will be whether the partners can achieve seamless integration of hardware, software and service – an area where Caterpillar already has a lead through its digital transformation.
