HAMM has developed oscillation as a compaction technology for asphalt construction and earthworks. Unlike conventional vibratory systems, oscillation transmits compaction energy horizontally through shear forces, keeping the drum in continuous contact with the surface.

In an oscillation drum, two eccentric shafts are mounted at 180° to one another. Both unbalanced masses rotate synchronously, causing the drum to oscillate rapidly forwards and backwards in a rotational motion. Compaction energy is transmitted tangentially into the ground as shear forces in alternating directions. Because the drum never loses contact with the surface, static compaction from the machine's dead weight acts continuously, supplemented by the dynamic shear forces.

HAMM describes its oscillation range as the broadest in the industry, spanning asphalt models (type designations VO, VO-S, OT, VS-OS, VIO) and earthwork variants (VIO). The company is the only manufacturer to offer oscillation in compact tandem rollers starting at 2.5 tonnes, as well as fully electric rollers with zero local emissions.

The technology is targeted at specific use cases: large projects such as motorways, racetracks, and airports; bridges and multi-storey car parks; and inner-city areas close to historical buildings. Oscillation produces homogeneous and high-quality compaction results, according to HAMM. Reduced noise emissions are inherent to the oscillation principle, as the drum does not repeatedly impact the surface. When paired with fully electric drive systems, oscillation rollers eliminate both local exhaust emissions and combustion noise. The compaction process reduces the number of passes required for efficient compaction and conserves valuable resources while reducing CO₂ emissions.
