Komatsu has introduced the PC38MR-5, a mini excavator with a short tail swing design and 18.2 kW (24.4 hp) engine power. The machine weighs 3,725 kilograms in operation and achieves a maximum digging depth of 3.455 meters. Komatsu positions the model for use on tight construction sites: courtyards, urban street work, demolition and utility line installation. Wherever conventional construction machinery cannot maneuver, the PC38MR-5 is designed to demonstrate its strengths.

The heart of the machine is the CLSS hydraulic system (Closed-Centre Load Sensing System). Komatsu promises high working speed and precise control with all movements, even with combined maneuvers. The system couples a variable displacement pump with a closed control loop that continuously detects the load. This allows operations to remain consistently efficient regardless of load and engine speed. The bucket capacity ranges from 0.04 to 0.12 cubic meters.

For applications with attachments, the machine can be equipped with a separate hydraulic circuit for PowerTilt systems and a single-acting quick coupler line. The PowerTilt line is routed on the boom to minimize damage and increase service life.

The PC38MR-5 offers a selection of six work modes that can be accessed via electrohydraulic controls. The machine comes standard with an auto-deceleration function that automatically reduces engine speed at constant partial load. When the machine is idle for extended periods, the engine automatically shuts down – both functions are standard equipment. The primary hydraulic line operates with proportional flow, also standard.

For daily inspections, the engine hoods can be opened wide. The forward-folding cabin provides access to all important hydraulic components. Komatsu aims to achieve short downtime and simple maintenance.

The machine comes standard equipped with KOMTRAX, Komatsu's wireless telematics system. KOMTRAX provides real-time data on operating hours, location, fuel consumption and maintenance intervals. Fleet managers can monitor utilization and plan service intervals proactively.
