Configurations: Rigid-frame haul trucks have a continuous frame and fixed axle arrangement — dominant in mining and quarrying (Caterpillar 777, 785, 793F/G, 794AC, 797F; Komatsu HD605/785/1500/930E; Liebherr T 264/T 274/T 282/T 284; Belaz 75710). Articulated dump trucks (see separate ADT entry) have an articulation joint between tractor and hauler for off-road manoeuvring and are used mainly on earthworks sites.

Classes and payloads: mining light class 30-50 t payload (Cat 770/772, Komatsu HD465), standard 60-100 t (Cat 777, 785, Komatsu HD785), large 100-200 t (Cat 789, 793, Liebherr T 264), ultra-large 200-400 t (Cat 797F at 363 t payload, Komatsu 980E at 327 t, Liebherr T 284 at 363 t, Belaz 75710 at 450 t — the world's largest series-produced haul truck). The 400-t class works almost exclusively in copper mines (Chuquicamata Chile, Grasberg Indonesia) and oil sands (Athabasca Canada).

Drive systems: Mechanical diesel drive dominates up to approx. 90 t payload — direct diesel transmission to drive wheels, robust and low-maintenance. From 90 t upwards, diesel-electric drive prevails: the diesel engine drives a generator, which supplies power via inverters to electric motors at the drive wheels. Advantages: no gearbox wear parts in the driveline, precise torque control, regeneration on downhill sections. Cat 794AC, Liebherr T 264 and Komatsu 930E-5 are well-known diesel-electric models. Trolley-assist (overhead catenary like on trolleybuses) reduces fuel consumption on long uphill hauls by 20-40 percent — in use with ABB and Siemens eMine systems in Chile and South Africa.

Electrification in the 2020s: the Swiss Kuhn eDumper (110 t payload, in service since 2018 at the Biberist limestone quarry) runs fully battery-electric — with regeneration on downhill hauls, it produces more energy than it consumes. Cat, Komatsu and Liebherr have announced battery-electric large haul trucks for 2027-2030. Autonomous haul trucks are in serial operation at Rio Tinto (Australia), BHP (Chile) and Suncor (Canada) — Komatsu FrontRunner and Cat Command for Hauling are the market leaders.

Regulations and operation: haul trucks in Germany are not subject to the StVZO road-traffic code (no public-road use), but to the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (BetrSichV) and DGUV Regel 100-500. In quarries additionally BUV (Mining Regulation) and mine ordinance. New purchase prices: Cat 777 (100 t) approx. EUR 3.2-3.8 million, Cat 793F (240 t) approx. EUR 6.5-7.2 million, Cat 797F (363 t) approx. EUR 12.5-14.5 million. Fuel consumption Cat 777: approx. 90-115 l/h, Cat 797F: approx. 250-320 l/h. Operating cost per tonne of material moved — thanks to extreme scale — sits at just EUR 0.15-0.35/t moved over short distances.
