In the core 30-40 t segment, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr and Volvo hold the highest European market shares.

Track shoes and undercarriage: Shoe widths from 600 to 900 mm are standard; for swampy ground, swamp shoes up to 1,100 mm are available (Liebherr R 946 Litronic Wetlands, specialised versions). The track itself consists of 43-49 links per side with hardened pins and bushings, designed for around 6,000-8,000 operating hours in the 30-t class. Conversions from standard shoes to street pads (rubber blocks on steel shoes) enable short site relocations without lowbed transport — practically limited to in-plant movements.

Transport between sites: A 30-t crawler excavator exceeds the 40-t maximum load of a regular semi-trailer and, in Germany, requires a lowbed with tandem or triple axle group (e.g. Goldhofer TU2, Faymonville MegaMAX). Transport widths over 3.00 m require an exceptional permit (BF3 escort vehicle). Larger excavators (Cat 349 at 50 t, Liebherr R 966) are usually disassembled (boom, counterweight, undercarriage separately) and transported on two to three lowbeds.

Powertrain and EU Stage V: Standard engines in the 30-t class deliver 120-160 kW to Stage V, combined with hydrostatic travel drive and load-sensing hydraulics. New series (Cat 320 Next Gen, Komatsu PC-11 series, Liebherr Generation 8) typically offer 15-20 percent lower fuel consumption than the previous generation. The battery-electric shift is reaching this segment now: Liebherr R 950 Litronic G8 Full Electric (cable electric, for quarries with fixed power supply), Volvo EC230 Electric (prototype), Cat 320 Electric — not yet in series, but pilot deployments at Skanska and Volvo Construction Group are underway.

Applications: heavy excavation for pits and tunnels, quarries and gravel pits, road construction (excavation for rail lines, motorways), dike and hydraulic engineering, demolition with high-reach demolition booms (long-reach 20-40 m, models such as Liebherr R 950 Demolition, Cat 340 UHD). The combination of high traction, high operating weight and large hydraulic breakout force makes the crawler excavator irreplaceable in the heavy segment — despite higher operating costs per hour compared to the wheeled excavator (approx. EUR 20-25/h extra in the 30-t class, mainly due to higher fuel consumption and track wear).
