Powertrain concept: engines in the 45-55 kW range to EU Stage V, mostly with DPF and in the upper class with SCR catalyst. Standard steel track shoes 450-600 mm wide; for noise-sensitive applications, rubber track pads that do not damage asphalt are used. The dual hydraulic circuit (max. operating pressure 260-320 bar, flow rate 130-200 l/min) supplies bucket cylinder and attachment in parallel — a prerequisite for simultaneous digging and slewing.

Primary applications: utility connections (water, gas, electricity, district heating), road maintenance (kerb setting, manhole covers), commercial fitout and refurbishment (slabs for small halls), landscape and garden works (ponds, streams), tree felling with felling grapple attachment, winter operations with plough or snow-plough attachment. In this size, the compact excavator is the typical one-operator machine for smaller contractors and municipal operations.

Transport and permits: An 8-t midi excavator exceeds the permitted total mass of a regular passenger-car trailer (3.5 t) and requires a lorry with load bed for road transport, or a 3.5-t trailer with a towing vehicle above 7.5 t. Operation only requires a category C1 (7.5 t) or C (above 7.5 t) LGV licence. Unlike wheeled excavators, the tracked compact excavator is not road-legal — it must always be transported between sites on a trailer.

Purchase cost and economics: a new 8-t compact excavator costs in 2025 typically EUR 68,000-89,000 net depending on specification; the cheapest Chinese suppliers (LiuGong, Sany, XCMG) sit at EUR 45,000-55,000 but typically sacrifice service network and residual value. Weekly rental rates: EUR 590-720 net. Owner-operator amortisation from approximately 900-1,100 annual operating hours; below this, renting is commercially superior. Fuel consumption: 7-10 l/h in typical site operation.
