Cat 308.5 (zero-tail) has a smaller diesel tank (100 l instead of 130 l on standard 308) — with average consumption, 5-6 h runtime before refuelling. Practically irrelevant for most compact operations because refuelling happens frequently anyway.

Applications: indoor demolition (breaking out walls next to standing walls), basement construction (excavator works in shell basement, wall connection), façade work (excavator next to house, bucket swings at façade), kerb re-laying (excavator on road, rear does not project into oncoming traffic), sewer repair in narrow alleys (typical old-town Regensburg, Rothenburg), landscape and garden works in narrow driveways (row-house terrace excavation).

Switching from standard to zero-tail: operators moving from a standard excavator to zero-tail must reassess reverse driving — the visual reference point "tail overhang" is gone. Initial experience: the excavator feels more reserved because without the counterweight extension of the tail, one can no longer dig with a full-bucket forward push at the same position — hydraulics reduce digging force in the front zone. In practice no disadvantage, because the reduced digging forces still exceed typical site requirements.

Prices: zero-tail premium versus standard excavator in 2025 has practically disappeared in the compact segment — series effects make zero-tail partly cheaper than standard. In the mid-range (Cat 308 CR / 308) 5-10 percent premium. New deliveries in the compact segment (up to 6 t): >80 percent zero-tail. New deliveries 6-14 t: about 40 percent zero-tail, 60 percent short-tail. Above 14 t, zero-tail is rare and usually a special model.
