Wirtgen Group is trialling a laser-based edge detection system on Vögele road pavers at its Heidelberg site, marking a step towards greater automation in asphalt paving. The sensor technology automatically identifies road edges during laydown, reducing the need for manual steering corrections and minimising material overspill. For contractors, this translates to lower material costs and reduced operator fatigue on long paving runs. The pilot forms part of the group's broader digitisation strategy for road construction equipment, though no timeline for commercial rollout has been confirmed.
