Material handling describes the loading, sorting, and transfer of bulk materials, scrap metal, and piece goods using purpose-built or adapted construction equipment. The term covers a distinct machine category as well as a functional task performed by excavators, wheel loaders, and cranes fitted with appropriate attachments.

Equipment Types

Dedicated material handlers are built on a raised superstructure (elevated cab) that gives the operator a clear line of sight over truck beds, scrap piles, or sorting bins. Undercarriages are available as stationary pedestal mounts, crawler chassis, or wheeled/rubber-tired platforms, depending on whether the machine is used in a fixed port or scrapyard position or needs to relocate across a site. Reach is a defining parameter: handlers for scrap and waste sorting commonly offer working heights well beyond those of standard excavators of comparable operating weight, achieved through longer boom and stick combinations optimized for lifting rather than digging force.

Attachments and Tooling

Typical end effectors include orange-peel and clamshell grapples for bulk and scrap, electromagnets for ferrous separation, hydraulic grabs for mixed waste, and shears or pulverizers when material handling overlaps with demolition and recycling tasks. Quick-change couplers allow a single carrier to switch between grapple, magnet, and bucket within a shift, which is relevant for operations handling mixed material streams such as construction and demolition waste.

Applications

Core use cases include port and terminal bulk handling (coal, ore, aggregates), scrapyard and recycling operations, timber and biomass handling, and waste-to-energy plant feeding. Material handlers are also deployed in demolition contexts, where their reach and stability support structural dismantling once a building has been reduced to loadable debris and metal fractions. In quarrying and aggregates production, material handling functions are increasingly integrated into loading cycles of tracked excavators and wheel loaders through assistance systems that automate bucket penetration and fill level for more consistent throughput.

Load Measurement and Digital Support

Weighing systems integrated into wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks provide continuous load data during material handling cycles, supporting payload tracking and cycle optimization without separate weighbridge stops. Digital tipping and safety platforms extend into related transport operations, covering front-end and roll-off systems used downstream of material handling and loading.
